Bald! Your wig may be "toxic"

"Sister, how's your hairline lately?" Hair loss is a small annoyance for young people nowadays. Many consumers choose to buy wig products to pretend to have natural hair, even if they are not severely bald. People who want to achieve a "full head of hair" or a "voluminous head of hair" often use wigs or hairpieces. So, what is the quality of wigs on the market?

Attention! Your wig may contain "hazardous substances"

Recently, the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee purchased 40 wig products from various online platforms and physical stores for testing. These products include 21 sets of wigs and 19 hairpieces, with prices ranging from 99 yuan to 6534 yuan. In addition to testing the wearability of the wigs according to multiple standards, the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee also tested the wig materials and safety issues that consumers are concerned about but are not covered by current standards. Safety is always the first concern for consumers. Do wig products contain harmful substances? Are they safe? The Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee conducted safety tests on wig samples regarding combustion performance and hazardous substances.

The combustion performance test results showed that wigs containing synthetic fibers would burn more rapidly and intensely during the combustion process if they were not flame retardant treated. They would produce a large amount of melting droplets, which could easily cause secondary combustion and pose certain safety risks.

The test found that 4 samples did not exhibit sustained combustion, indicating that these 4 samples had undergone flame retardant treatment during production. The remaining 19 samples exhibited sustained combustion, melting droplets, and burning of cotton fibers.

The production process of wigs is similar to other textiles and inevitably requires washing and post-processing. Therefore, the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee included alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates as safety indicators to test whether wigs residues contained restricted substances that could harm human health. Alkylphenols (AP) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) are the main components of non-ionic surfactants, which are widely used in industrial detergents. These substances have been proven to be toxic to organisms and are listed as restricted hazardous substances in relevant product standards such as down jackets and cashmere products.

According to the test, among the 40 wig samples, 15 samples did not contain the aforementioned hazardous substances, 16 samples contained these substances but in a total content of less than 100mg/kg, and 9 samples had total content of these substances exceeding 100mg/kg. One wig sample produced by Xuchang Aisi Hair Products Co., Ltd. (brand: Nayoo) had a measured total content of alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates of 448.79mg/kg.

In addition, the actual material of wig products may differ from what is stated on the product. Currently, the main wig materials on the market are full human hair (100% hair fiber), synthetic hair (100% polyester fiber), and blended hair (hair fiber + polyester fiber), each with differences in realism, comfort, and price.

Among the 40 wig samples, only 33 samples were labeled with material information. Some samples had incomplete labeling information and unclear material proportions, such as specifying the material as "matte high-temperature silk," "imported silk blend," "memory hair," etc.

One wig sample purchased on Tmall, distributed by Hangzhou Qianniao Trading Co., Ltd. and produced by Jinhua Mengfayuan Wig Co., Ltd. (brand: misssecret, product name: Zmw-05 ponytail binding), claimed to be real hair, but was actually a blend of hair fiber (52.2%) and polyester fiber (47.8%).

Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee tells you the correct way to buy wigs

The dazzling array of wig products can be overwhelming. What factors should be considered when buying wigs? What is the correct method for selecting wig products? The Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee suggests that there are many types of wigs on the market, and consumers should first focus on the quality and safety of the products when choosing, and then consider their own needs and economic capabilities to choose different types and grades of products. Choose wigs that are suitable for your face shape and skin color. When buying wigs, check if the hang tag packaging includes the manufacturer and contact information, making it easier to contact the company if there are quality issues. Based on the test results, wigs made of full human hair or with a higher hair fiber content have better breathability, while synthetic hair wigs have poorer breathability. It is recommended that consumers choose hand-woven wig products with single cap bases to ensure good comfort when meeting daily appearance needs. How can consumers distinguish wig materials? How to differentiate the quality of products?

Consumers can cut a few strands of hair and burn them to see if there is a hair burning smell and if the residue is brittle. If so, it is real hair; if not, it is synthetic hair.

Wigs that are too light or overly bright in color generally do not have a good grip. If purchasing this type of wig product, reduce the frequency of washing and drying.

In addition, consumers can try pulling out a hair strand from different areas of the wig to see if it breaks completely, or use their fingers to comb the wig naturally 5 times to observe if there is hair loss to judge the hair loss performance of the product.

The wig industry has developed rapidly in recent years, and the expanding market size also reflects the lack of standards. The wig material composition and restricted substances related to consumers in this comparative test conducted by the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee are not fully matched by existing standards. In response to the issues revealed in this comparative test, the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee will work together with industry associations, relevant testing and quality departments to study and promote the establishment and improvement of relevant standards, thereby promoting the standardized development of the wig industry and the improvement of product quality. 2023 Wig Comparative Test Rating Chart (Full Human Hair).
